Pumajaw - Curiosity Box [2008]

A brand new album from Pinky Maclure and John Wills, Curiosity Box finds Pumajaw faithfully replicating the post folk revival fusions of the early '70s with a little help from fellow Brit folkers Alidair Roberts and James Yorkston. While the songwriting and vocal delivery is very much shaped by traditional folk values, the sort of instrumentation Pumajaw utilize defies convention, having more in common with Six Organs Of Admittance than Shirley Collins, something demonstrated ably by the trance-inducing psychedelia of 'Visiting Hour Pt. 2'. The relatively faithful harmonium-driven balladry of 'Mother & The Two Trees' shows that the duo can adhere to old-fashioned values when they want to, although it's not long before the almost inevitable close call with Wicker Man-style wyrdness crops up on 'Buds', which in no small way resembles an electronically enhanced 'Willow's Song'. Curisosity Box has a lot going for it - it's a highly enjoyable and gratifyingly unpredictable alt. folk outing with all the right leanings towards gothic storytelling and pastoral melancholy.

MV,EE and Gabriel Walsh - Temptation To Zoology [2003]

Matt Valentine Interview / Dream Magazine

Matt Valentine has made some of the most enjoyable acoustic based psychedelic improvisational music ever recorded, both in his several solo albums (usually with Erika Elder aka EE, pictured above with MV), and work with the band Tower Recordings (with folks like: P.G. Six, Helen Rush, Erika Elder, and Tim Barnes among others). Matt’s solo albums tend towards the more spare and spectral end of the spectrum; acoustic explorations that show their Fahey roots as well as a deep love of Indian classical music and much more. The music he makes with Tower Recordings fuses a Takoma Records acoustic based organic folk sensibility with a spaceman/caveman psychedelic tribalism that employs: various (mostly) acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, marimba, tin whistle, Wurlitzer electric piano, ring modulator, shakuhachi, cello, piano, tapes, primitive electronics, autoharp, oscillator, drums, and more with a sense that they are also playing the acoustics of the given space they are reverberating within. There is some Incredible String Band in the mix as well; along with, the earliest recorded blues, ESP Disk outsider vibes, and clouds and clouds of smoke. Some of Matt’s finest solo outings include: Tonight! One Night Only! MV & EE in Heaven (originally issued on Matt’s Child of Microtones imprint, and later on vinyl by Time-Lag), Space Chanties (Fringes Recordings), and Glorious Group Therapy (Ecstatic Yod). A couple essential TR releases are: Furniture Music for Evening Shuttles (Siltbreeze), and Folk Scene (Communion).

Jackie-O Motherfucker : Freedomland [2008]

Artist: Jackie O Motherfucker
Album: Freedomland
Label: Very Friendly
Review date: Oct. 9, 2008

Freedomland documents a series of live performances by the summer 2006 incarnation of Jackie O Motherfucker, an outfit centered around guitarist and turntablist Tom Greenwood, but with a rotating cast of supporting members. This version of JOMF is a particularly incendiary one, jettisoning the gentler folkier experiments of the Theo Angell/Samara Lubielski years, and focusing instead on a noisy, freely improvised clatter and storm.

The impetus for the shift is likely Inca Ore’s Eve Salens, who also sang with JOMF on 2006’s Valley of Fire. She is an extraordinarily volatile presence here, caterwauling and moaning and free-associating through a minefield of explosive sounds. Utterly unconstrained, she has a speaking-in-tongues quality that encourages everyone else in the band to greater levels of cacophony. Consider for instance, the relatively accessible opening track "Devotion" where she chants "You know devotion," over and over at escalating volumes. As she approaches catharsis, the drummer, Danny Sasaki, follows right along with her, his pounding coalescing into an almost continuous barrage of pounding. The guitars, too, erupt into jagged masses of discord, underlining the chaotic crescendo. The lyrics seem almost random. They are delivered in a flat sing-song with odd syllables emphasized. And yet, the excitement is palpable.

Tom Carter & Christian Kiefer - A Rather Solemn Promise / From The Great American Songbook [2007/2008]

From The Great American Songbook CD

Preservation sure now how to package their releases: this second collaboration between Charalambides' Tom Carter and Christian Keefer comes housed in a lovely fold-out sleeve housing thick card inserts with liner notes for each song as penned by some of the avant-folk royalty these two are prone to hanging around with. Wooden Wand, Sharron Kraus, Glenn Jones, Tetuzi Akiyama and Tony Conrad are among the writers who pay tribute not only to Tom and Christian, but their source material - all of which comes from American traditional folk songs now in the public domain. As you'd probably expect, these two aren't always prone to sticking closely to their original texts, and familiar standards like 'Camptown Races' are given a fairly liberal overhaul. Tony Conrad writes at length about the interesting use of 'Doodah' in the original, citing this as one of the earliest examples of scat singing. That's the kind of info most albums just wouldn't bother giving you, but you'll be glad of the pains Preservation have gone to in providing context for these often very obscure songs (usually made that little bit more obscure by the adventurous cover artists). Highly Recommended.

A Rather Solemn Promise CD

Charalambides' Tom Carter teams up with fellow string alchemist Christian Kiefer for some Loren Mazzacane Connors-influenced spectral blues. Once you've got over the gorgeous hand-screened sleeves (courtesy of Badgerlore's Rob Fisk) you're in for the kind of freeform guitar duets that made similarly-minded outings (such as last year's excellent Tetuzi Akiyama & Donald McPherson head-to-head) such captivating listening. The tone varies between the rollicking Takoma-isms of 'Glass Palace' and the slide guitar weirdness of 'Song the Land Sings', via the ghostly banjo bust-ups of 'Snake River', with each piece delivered with a stereo dynamics setup whereby one musician takes the left, the other the right, giving a real sense of being in and amongst the performance. Tom Carter's guitar in Charalambides has always been enriched with a kind of starkly atmospheric resonance, and in Kiefer he's clearly found a likeminded artist. Consequently, it's a great pleasure to hear the two meandering through these psyched-up American Primitive discourses with such a gnarled authenticity.

Suki Ewers - Kind of Hazy [2008]

Suki Ewers has spent her career perfecting a glorious, countrified strand of dream-pop as part of bands Mazzy Star, Opal and Anemone, and this new Kramer-produced solo outing is comparable with the slowcore loveliness of Low, the stargazing Nashville sounds of Cortney Tidwell, and most obviously, the opiated balladry of former bandmate Hope Sandoval, particularly on the brilliant opener 'Time After Time'. The songwriting and production are in perfect harmony, sounding like a pedal steel-toting Velvet Underground on 'All Day Long', whilst spouting blasts of echoing guitar distortion and searing synthesizer on 'This Must Be Heaven'. Sidestepping the dream-pop pitfalls, Ewers never hides her songs - or for that matter her vocals - behind the array of studio techniques and effects that help shape this album, and Kind Of Hazy resounds far more clearly than its title might have you believe.

Matt Valentine + Erika Elder - "Ragas of the Culvert" / "Total Loss Songs" [2008]

MV & EE is a group of musicians focused around Matt "MV" Valentine and his partner Erika "EE" Elder. Matt Valentine was in the neo-psychedelic group, The Tower Recordings. While the duo recorded under many different names, including MV & EE Medicine Show and The Bummer Road, most of the records center around both artists and feature a rotating cast of additional musicians. Their style is self-described as "lunar ragas", with many of the lyrics dealing with celestial imagery. They combine Indian raga style composition with Appalachian folk and post-psychedelic electrical experimentalism. They use Western and Eastern acoustic instruments amplified and augmented with effects such as reverb, delay, and flange. Their compositions occasionally feature vocals, which are off-kilter and rambling, while seeming drugged.

LSD March

(It gets so lonely in the belly of a whale. But the acoustics are fantastic. The pitch and yaw of its cavernous gut lowing with a long, guttural song burst. This is met by a loud, wailing which drone swells up as millions of gallons pass through tons of ambergris. These massive internal sound collisions resonate into a monstrous feedback of even greater proportion than the beast itself. And Jonah smiles. This is the sound of LSD March. Be the body of Christ and let the whale take of YOU.
LSD March is a Japanese psychedelic rock group, based in the city of Himeji. It is led by singer and guitarist Shinsuke Michishita. The group is named after a track by krautrock group Guru Guru. Michishita has also played with Magura Mozart and Doodles.) *

Chilean band of the old school, his ultramodern offer in ' 80s, difficult receptive digestion, but extremely valued with posteriority, new materials.

Dead Meadow

It supports the energy at the edge of the psychodelic dementia of classic bands as the Sabbath, riff intense sharing matter with a melodic voice. To my taste you have to light a cigarette and raise the volume to your sound system, play with equalizer well the low ones.
