The Cranes se forma con los hermanos Jim (bateria) y Alison Shaw (voz), en 1988, Portsmouth, England; dos años más tarde se reunen con Mark Francombe (guitarra) y Matt Cope (bajo). La banda trabajo en sus inicios de forma independiente, solventando su música rodeada de estilos Alternativos, o Dream Pop, la placa Loved de 1994 representa un estilo más comercial.
